THE ITALIAN GRAPE (91)
This is a beautiful wine from Guado al Tasso. Lots of elegance, freshness and a refined finish with tropical fruit, apples and pears in the nose. Beautiful fresh wine with balanced acidity and a round and smooth finish. The finesse and freshness of Bolgheri is beautifully reflected in the wine. Great Vermentino!
FALSTAFF (92)
Bright straw yellow with silver reflections. Intense nose of sliced apple and meadow flowers, with an aftertaste of almonds and flint. Good saltiness on the palate, powerful and persistent, fresh fruit aromas and well-integrated acidity, comes back slightly bitter.
About the wine
Since 1990, Guado al Tasso estate has crafted a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and occasionally Petit Verdot, reflecting the complexity and elegance of Bolgheri terroir. The vineyards, nestled in alluvial soils with rocky deposits known as "scheletro," benefit from the Bolgheri Amphitheater's unique microclimate, characterized by cool nocturnal breezes. This optimal environment ensures pronounced aromas and perfect ripening of the grapes.
The label shows the Della Gherardesca family symbol. It honors the people who used to own the estate. The estate was owned by the Gherardesca family until 1930 when the Antinori family acquired it. Renowned as a pillar of the DOC Bolgheri, Guado al Tasso epitomizes the essence of "super Tuscans," producing wines with a distinctly Mediterranean character—powerful, elegant, and balanced. Each vintage, varying percentages of grapes, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with additions of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Syrah, undergo classic Bordeaux-style aging in new barriques for approximately 14 months.
The 2024 growing season in Bolgheri started with mild winter weather and minimal rainfall, leading to early vine budding on March 20th. Spring brought moderate rain, requiring careful vineyard management to maintain vine health. July's hot, dry weather slowed vegetative growth and provided ideal conditions for veraison and ripening. While August temperatures were typical, hot, dry northern winds from August 20-25 caused some dehydration in exposed vineyards. Late August brought rain and cooler temperatures, which restored favorable ripening conditions. September was sunny and dry, ensuring the grapes reached peak maturity. The Vermentino harvest took place from September 1st to 20th.
