THE ITALIAN GRAPE (98)
The 2019 is a beautiful year, with more rain in May and July than on the coast resulting in fresh, balanced reds with finesse and the structure to age. The finesse is especially evident in the Tignanello 2019. For me, the 2018 and 2019 are the best vintages to keep in the cellar. Why? Because it has an incredible amount of power, full, ripe tannins but in an elegant way in which you can imagine how it will develop in the next 10 years. They are both teenagers who know which direction they want to go in life, but who are coming close to their North star in the next 10 years, they need the time to explore. This shows the pure class of the Tignanello. The 2019 is on the slightly less full side with slightly less power than the 2018. It has a softer balance with lots of dark fruit and less intense notes of leather and tobacco. A wine that deserves a place in your collection!
ROBERT PARKER (96)
The Marchesi Antinori 2019 Tignanello was born in a classic growing season that saw some cooling summer rains and relatively stress-free conditions. This is an elegant and extremely polished wine made with mostly Sangiovese and smaller parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Here too, the small blending element of Cabernet Franc has been slowly increasing in recent years. The 2019 vintage was born with a good amount of power and tannic structure, and maceration times were slightly reduced as a result. This less extractive approach shapes a polished and elegant wine with plenty of bright berry fruit, cherry, dried mint, blue flower, blood orange and rusty earth. The palate is more compact and streamlined. It shows beautiful grace. After this, the next vintage to watch is the highly anticipated 2021.
JAMES SUCKLING (95)
Extremely perfumed and vivid, with fresh mushrooms, cherry stones and blackberries. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins that are long and complete. Fresh acidity. Tangy and vibrant. Lovely is the word.
About the wine
In the heart of Tuscany's picturesque landscape lies Tignanello—a wine that revolutionized winemaking since its inception in 1971. Blending Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, it defied convention, marking a turning point in Italian wine history. Nurtured in Chianti Classico's vineyards, Tignanello thrives in soils rich in marine origins, crafting a wine of unparalleled depth and complexity. Its winemaking process, meticulously unchanged, involves aging in barriques and precise vinification, ensuring consistent quality and tradition.
Designed by Silvio Coppola in 1974, Tignanello's iconic label exudes elegance, adding a touch of sophistication to its allure. Marchese Piero Antinori's decision to have his father, Niccolò, sign the label pays homage to his legacy, symbolizing gratitude and respect. Thus, Tignanello stands not only as a symbol of innovation but also as a testament to the timeless beauty and tradition of Tuscan winemaking, captivating enthusiasts worldwide with its exceptional quality and heritage.
The 2019 growing season in Chianti Classico experienced typical weather patterns. Winter was cold with limited rainfall, followed by a cool and rainy first half of spring, particularly in April and May. Summer brought hot weather with slightly above-average precipitation, ensuring normal growth for vines and grape clusters. Ideal conditions prevailed from late August through September and October, allowing all grape varieties in the Tignanello vineyard to ripen optimally. Harvesting commenced in the latter half of September with Sangiovese and concluded on October 16th with Cabernet.
