THE ITALIAN GRAPE (97)
A unique wine is the Tenuta Nuova, in my opinion, by far the best value Brunello on the market. What an experience this wine is! So pure, so focused, and so full, a truly full-bodied wine with plenty of complexity, a wine that can certainly benefit from a few more years in the cellar. Even though 2015 is known for its more approachable wines and balanced, the Tenuta Nuova stands out and bursts with a plethora of aromas that you would not necessarily expect from a Brunello 2015. Truly an amazing wine!
ROBERT PARKER (98)
Giacomo Neri and his family have crafted a wine that impresses from the first sip forward (especially when the wine is given ample time to open). The Casanova di Neri 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova must be treated with patience, and that patience is returned with many great rewards. Blackberry, plum and summer cherry are slowly folded into lasting flavors of spice, leather and beautiful balsam or medical herb. These are always a distinctive signature of this estate. The aromas flow with seamless transitions, and that fluid and ever-changing nature of the bouquet is what helps to build intensity and staying power. Fruit is harvested from a south- and southeast-facing slope at 250 to 300 meters above sea level. The soils are mixed loosely with crushed rock, allowing access to air and moisture. Indeed, pretty mineral accents appear as the wine takes on more air in the glass. What stands out most in this Brunello is the quality of the bouquet that is rigid and firm, yet not excessively so. You feel the structural texture of the wine as it sits firmly over the palate, yet there is mobility and softness to its many moving parts. I tasted this wine at various intervals over a 24-hour period.
About the wine
Before Giovanni Neri started the Casanova di Neri winery in 1971, the land in Montalcino was used for farming. Giovanni wanted to make top-quality Brunello di Montalcino, so he bought more land in areas with great conditions for growing big plants. Now, the vineyard covers 500 hectares, with 63 hectares for grapes and 20 hectares for olive trees. Since the first harvest in 1978, Casanova di Neri has been making amazing wines every year. They're considered some of the best in Tuscany and have a great reputation worldwide. The vineyards are in a special area with a good microclimate, on the southern slope near Castelnuovo dell'Abate and Cerretalto, in the eastern part of Montalcino.
Tenuta Nuova is a new vineyard project created by Casanova di Neri, driven by their strong belief and passion. It is a place where Sangiovese grapes were never grown before. Casanova di Neri wanted to make a Brunello wine that is powerful yet easy to enjoy and can age well. They started by studying the different local climates and the best places to grow grapes. Through careful research and passion, they used advanced scientific methods to choose the best grape varieties, planting methods, and other details to grow excellent Sangiovese grapes. This is one of the very best wines from Montalcino.
In the 2015 vintage, a warm yet not excessively hot summer, coupled with sufficient rainfall and healthy fruit, yielded ripe and luscious Brunellos, packed with tannins. The top-quality ones possess the acidity necessary for long-term aging. This year marks a historic milestone for Brunello di Montalcino, offering wines of exceptional quality that should not be overlooked. Despite their ripe and rich characteristics, the wines exhibit remarkable precision, with vibrant fruit, fine tannins, and refreshing acidity, making them some of the most thrilling in recent years.
