Castello di Ama

The Ama estate dates back to pre-Roman times and is of Etruscan origin. During the Roman Empire, the estate belonged to the Firidolfi family. Unfortunately, the castle was destroyed in the 15th century during an invasion of the Chianti area. In the end, the castle is rebuilt with the same materials. Then there are several owners who start planting vines and this is how Castello di Ama is created. The winery is founded in 1972.

The winery has 90 hectares of vines in use, this area is divided over several plots. The vineyards are between 420- and 540-meters altitude. The main grape varieties planted are Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Mero, and Malvasia Nera. An average of 350,000 bottles are produced each year, both Chianti Classico and IGT wines. In total there are twelve different wines on the market. The main Chianti Classico wines are Ama, Montebuoni and Castello di Ama Riserva. The main IGT wines are Haiku, L'apparita and Il Chiuso. In addition, the winery also produces a Vin Santo, the famous Tuscan sweet wine.

The grape bunches are rigorously selected several times. After a few days of skin soaking, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks. The red wines then mature in oak barrels, the duration of which varies per year and per cuvée. The wines are characterized as complex and elegant wines with a spicy aftertaste. In addition, all wines can be widely used gastronomically.

In 2005, the winery was named Winery of the Year by Gambero Rosso. This is not for nothing, because the wines of Castello di Ama are of high quality.

The best Castello di Ama vintages are: 1985, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2019.
