Emidio Pepe
Emidio Pepe stands out as a paragon of traditional winemaking, embodying artisanal practices that defy modern conventions. Learning the craft from his grandfather, Pepe adheres to the philosophy of "less is more," eschewing labor-saving pesticides and mechanization in favor of a hands-on approach. This commitment to minimalism extends to the winery itself, where only a tractor is present, devoid of any other machinery.
Over more than 50 years, Pepe's uncompromising methods have yielded consistently exceptional grape quality, resulting in revered Trebbiano and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wines that have garnered a cult following both locally and internationally. Despite modest changes, such as expanding the vineyard to 17 hectares and passing the torch to Pepe's daughters and granddaughters, the essence of artisanal winemaking remains unchanged.
Every step of the winemaking process at Emidio Pepe is carried out by hand, including grape pressing with feet, fermentation with indigenous yeasts in cement tanks, and aging directly in bottles within an impressive cellar. This meticulous attention to detail ensures that each wine reflects the terroir, grape variety, and vintage with unparalleled authenticity.
Pepe's wines are likened to the cherished recipes of an Italian nonna, cherished for their purity, expressiveness, and age-worthiness. While availability may be limited, the investment in Pepe's wines is rewarded with a drinking experience that epitomizes the essence of Abruzzo, making them among the finest natural wines Italy has to offer.
