Giacomo Conterno

Giacomo Conterno, also known as the godfather of Barolo is undeniably one of the top producers in Piedmont, known for its traditional approach to winemaking. Founded in 1908 by Giovanni Conterno, the estate shifted from bulk production to crafting powerful and complex Barolo wines in the 1920s. The first Monfortino, a renowned Barolo, is believed to have been bottled in either 1912 or 1920.

In 1961, Giacomo passed the reins to his sons Giovanni and Aldo. While Aldo later founded his own estate with a more modern winemaking philosophy, Giovanni remained true to his father's vision. Upon Giovanni's passing in 2004, the estate was inherited by his son Roberto, who continues the tradition of producing strictly traditional Barolo wines, widely regarded as the epitome of purity.

Located in Monforte d’Alba, Giacomo Conterno owns some of Piedmont's finest vineyards, including Cerretta, Arione, and Francia, situated at an average altitude of 500 meters, providing optimal conditions for Nebbiolo and Barbera vines.

Conterno was among the first to opt for extended maceration and aging in large wooden vats, a departure from the rapid production methods prevalent in Piedmont. Roberto continues this approach today, utilizing barrels that favor oxygenation and evolution while preserving the wines' varietal purity. In addition to Barolo, the estate produces high-quality Barbera d’Alba wines.

The wines produced by Giacomo Conterno are highly sought-after, and I make every effort to keep them in stock whenever possible. They are a must-try for any Barolo enthusiast, but their rarity is reflected in their price. Expect to pay between €900 and €1200 per bottle, but the experience is truly unforgettable.
