Il Marroneto

In the 1970s, when lawyer Giuseppe Mori started planting his first vineyard in Montalcino, his two sons, Andrea and Alessandro, were both keenly interested in the venture. While Andrea eventually pursued a legal career, Alessandro immersed himself in winemaking. With deep dedication and a sensitivity to Tuscany’s rich natural landscape and agricultural heritage, Alessandro transformed the relatively obscure Il Marroneto—a small, historically rooted estate around a medieval watchtower—into a leading producer of distinctive Brunello in the cooler, north-western part of the renowned wine region.

Alessandro is aided by the creative Lucia Nannetti and cellar manager Maurizio Valeriani. Managing just six hectares of vineyards, Il Marroneto follows a traditional, minimalist approach. The vines, situated on the nearly 400-meter-high Montosoli slopes, are minimally interfered with and are free from herbicides and conventional pesticides. Planted generously in sandy soils, the vines have ample space for robust root development.

Il Marroneto’s wines, produced in limited quantities, are known for their classic, elegant style and rich aromas without excessive concentration. The addition of a few new plots at lower elevations has enhanced the complexity of these exquisite Brunello wines, which have been crafted since the 1980 vintage.

Alessandro Mori meticulously oversees every aspect of production, from harvesting to bottling. Both the traditional Brunello and the Cru Madonna delle Grazie, named after a medieval chapel, mature in large Slavonian and Allier oak barrels in a cellar expanded in the 1990s. The meticulous care invested in Il Marroneto has garnered recognition from esteemed wine critics. For instance, the Madonna delle Grazie received high praise from influential critic Monica Larner, who selected it as the "Best Brunello 2011" and described it as a top choice among Brunellos.
