Isole e Olena

Located above the scenic Val d'Elsa in Chianti Classico's western region, Isole e Olena was established in 1956 by the De Marchi family and is now under the ownership of the French EPI group. Paolo de Marchi, known as Mr. Sangiovese, has dedicated decades to perfecting wine production conditions, prioritizing vineyard quality.

The poetically sounding name Isole e Olena has a completely different background than one might suspect. The wine estate Isole dates back to the 18th century, but the modern facilities of cellars and offices are located in the hamlet of Olena, where no one else lives. In 1976, Paolo settled near Isole and Olena's hamlets, transforming his parents' struggling vineyard into a thriving estate. In 2022, the winery transitioned to EPI ownership, with oenologist Emanuele Reolon succeeding Paolo in 2023. This ensures continuity in skilled hands, maintaining Tuscan wine culture's essence and independence.

Only one Chianti Classico is made and no Riserva. The demand for this wine has become so great that there is no reason to produce a Riserva. Instead, since 1980, there has been a prestigious wine called Cepparello, an I.G.T. wine. Their profound devotion to Sangiovese is evident, with their Chianti Classico almost exclusively from single vineyards and Cepparello, a top-tier wine, solely made from Sangiovese and aged in new barriques.

While French varieties like Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay are cultivated in small plots, marketed as "Collezione Privata," Isole e Olena prioritizes authenticity over trends, avoiding excessive barrique aging and focusing on expressing grape varieties and terroir faithfully. Their dedication to traditional winemaking styles has garnered appreciation, embodying Chianti Classico's identity and earning respect from enthusiasts like Andreas März.

If you ever get the chance to try their Cepparello, a 100% Sangiovese blend you will not regret it. I personally think it is one of the best price quality Super Tuscans together with the Flaccianello Della Pieve from Fontodi.

Top Isole e Olena vintages are: 1997, 1999, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2020.
