Pio Cesare
The history of winery Pio Cesare goes back to the year 1881. In that year Cesare Pio decided to establish a winery in the heart of the town of Alba, Piedmont. The idea was actually to produce a small amount of Barolo and Barbaresco for himself and his family. This plan eventually grows into a high-quality and high-quality wine company with many enthusiasts worldwide.
Meanwhile, the sixth generation has been at the helm since the death of Pio Boffa in the spring of 2021. But the old traditions still play an important role in the cellar. Pio's daughter, Federica Boffa, together with her cousin Cesare Benvenuto and her uncle Augusto Boffa runs the historic winery. The family owns 75 hectares. The underlying ones are based on different traits and properties.
The wine cellar is located in the historic center of Alba. Only a few wineries are still located here with their cellars. The wine cellar was built at the end of the 18th century, but the cellar is otherwise surrounded by ancient walls dating back to Roman times. So very unique! The winery is made up of four different layers, one of which is even lower than the Tanaro River. As a result, the temperature and the heating of nature are at a constant level.
Both fermentation and maturation take place in oak barrels made of Slavonian wood. Its duration depends on the specific wine. For several years now, the wines are no longer pumped around, but gravity is used. Because there is no longer a pump involved, the wines are more elegant and the flavors are better preserved. At Pio Cesare they don't produce twenty different wines. They are all produced in a traditional way and are all of high quality.
Pio Cesare is a winery with a wonderful history and an icon when it comes to classic Barolos and Barbarscos. All wines have already achieved scores of 90 points or higher several times!
