Sassetti Livio Pertimali

Before Brunello di Montalcino received its official designation in 1967, Livio Sassetti was already making exceptional Sangiovese wines. With a talent for identifying the finest vineyard locations, Sassetti, who grew up in the esteemed Montosoli region, laid the groundwork for what would become a celebrated winemaking legacy. As a co-founder of the Brunello Consortium, Sassetti played a crucial role in establishing the prestige and unique appeal of Brunello di Montalcino. His unwavering belief in the potential of Sangiovese in this remarkable wine-growing region, along with his pioneering spirit, helped elevate Brunello to its renowned status.

The vines are planted on the northern slopes of Montalcino, oriented southeast, in soils rich in calcareous clay. The bright blue skies and sunlight reflect off the light, fossil-rich subsoil, creating ideal conditions for growing Sangiovese grapes. Today, Lorenzo Sassetti, Livio’s successor, and his wife Sabina manage some of the most prized vineyards in Montalcino, benefiting from the excellent soil conditions for cultivating Sangiovese.

Livio Sassetti acquired these exceptional vineyards and part of the historic Podere Pertimali estate in 1960, naming the idyllic winery after himself. The signature spicy character of Sassetti Brunello and its Riserva, often accompanied by deep black cherry notes, is attributed not only to the prime Montosoli vineyards but also to the meticulous cellar work of Lorenzo Sassetti, which has shaped the winery’s distinctive style.

The use of 33-hectolitre barrels at the winery helps maintain the characteristic fruit intensity of Sangiovese, giving the wines their traditional Brunello charm. Lorenzo Sassetti has adeptly modernized his father’s techniques while preserving their traditional values, creating exceptionally elegant Brunello wines that rank among the best in the region.

In 1999, the Sassetti family expanded their estate with the purchase of land in the Maremma region. At their La Querciolina vineyard, they produce a highly regarded Montecucco Rosso, made from 100% Sangiovese, further showcasing their dedication to quality winemaking.
