Tenuta di Biserno

Lodovico Antinori is one of the founders of the rise of Bolgheri wines in the Maremma. Already in the 1980s he recognized the potential of this region on the hills along the coast of Tuscany. His successes with Ornellaia e Masseto have become well known. In 1994 an employee of Ornellaia showed him the land above Bolgheri towards Bibbona. It’s Called ‘’Bellaria’’ because there is a steady breeze in the vineyards. It was like love at first sight said Lodovico Antinori, because he was looking for an extension to the Ornellaia vineyards.

Lodovico and his team realized that the geological composition of the soils in Bellaria was different, hilly, and stony, clayey, and calcareous, with large pebbles. Not perfectly for Ornellaia, more suitable for another project. When Lodovico sold Ornellaia in 2001 it was time to start a new project. Together with his brother Piero, who runs the @marchesiantinori family business they started their new project Tenuta di Biserno. The Tenuta di Biserno is a property in an incredibly beautiful location in the Maremma, on a hill on the road from Bolgheri to Bibbona. The first harvest at the estate took place in 2003.

The vineyards were planted between 2001 and 2005. Mainly Cabernet Franc but also with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. The wine hills remind me of Saint Emilion and Pomerol said Lodovico. The annual production per year is around 160,000 bottles.

Tenuta di Biserno has become a great success in such a short time. Two masterminds of the Antinori family have put all their valuable knowledge into one project. Both well known for making the best super Tuscans now have their own winery where they make three super Tuscans. The Insoglio del Cinghiale (€20), the il Pino (€50), the Bibbona (€140), and the Lodovico (€450).

Top Tenuta di Biserno vintages are: 1997, 1998, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2019.
