THE ITALIAN GRAPE (98)
The Burlotto Acclivi 2019 is a piece of art. I am a big fan of all barolos produced in the 2019 vintage. One of my favorite vintages with an incredible amount of cellar potential. This acclivi from Burlotto is one of the finest Barolos from 2019 that I have tasted so far. A long finish in which the complexity of the wine shows itself incredibly beautifully and balanced. Dark fruit, spices and hints of leather. The wine is incredibly dark, intense and powerful. A unique barolo! Small production of this wine with approximately 7,000 bottles from the 2019 vintage.
ROBERT PARKER (97)
The 2019 Barolo Acclivi represents a blend of Nebbiolo from various hilltop sites in Verduno that have been selected for the quality of their fruit. The wine takes the concept of a Barolo "base" up one notch, because it represents a special selection of fruit that is not limited to a single parcel. This expression is grounded and even a bit heavier at its core, with more dark fruit and thickness that becomes its defining characteristic. This is especially true in a vintage like 2019 that already starts off with robust and sun-darkened fruit. The wine is not necessarily more accessible—because it is not—but it does offer a thicker caliber of Nebbiolo fruit.
About the wine
The Burlotto winery, located in Verduno, Piedmont, Italy, was founded in the mid-19th century. Specifically, it was established in 1850 by the visionary patriarch Giovanni Burlotto. Since then, the Burlotto family has been dedicated to crafting exceptional wines rooted in tradition and a deep connection to the land. After Giovan Battista's death, Burlotto winery passed to his son Francesco, then to grandson Ignazio after Francesco's premature passing. Ignazio, with courage and foresight, led the company through war. Despite challenges, he continued producing Pelaverga wine from his own vineyards and neighboring farms, shaping the legacy of Verduno Pelaverga. Upon Ignazio's death in 1968, the winery was inherited by his daughter Marina, then only seventeen years old.
Marina, Giuseppe Alessandria, and their children Fabio and Cristina lead the winery as the fourth and fifth generations. They persist in crafting the classic wines of Alba Langa, not by blindly adhering to antiquated methods, but by embracing a legacy forged through bold and inspired decisions. This responsibility is willingly shouldered, echoing the commitment of the generations that has crafted Burlotto wines.
The Comm. G.B. Brulotto 2019 Barolo Acclivi (with 7,000 bottles produced) represents a blend of selected fruit from various vineyards around Verduno, including old vines in Monvigliero, Neirane, Bocato and Rocche dell'Olmo. Barolo Acclivi is their best representation of the full potential of the entire territory of Verduno. Produced only in years in which the quality allows, from a rigorous selection of grapes from their best and oldest vineyards located in Verduno (Monvigliero, Neirane, Rocche dell’Olmo and Boscatto). The choice of vines and the final blend varies in relation to the characteristics of the vintage.
