THE ITALIAN GRAPE (92)
This is a beautiful wine from Tenuta di Biserno. Lots of elegance, freshness and a refined finish with tropical fruit, apples and pears in the nose. Beautiful fresh wine with balanced acidity and a round and smooth finish. The finesse and freshness of Bolgheri is beautifully reflected in the wine. Great Vermentino with a touch of Viognier!
About the wine
Tenuta di Biserno is the realization of Marchese Lodovico Antinori’s vision to explore a new, highly distinctive Tuscan terroir after his groundbreaking work in Bolgheri with Ornellaia. In the early 2000s, together with his brother Piero Antinori, he identified the hills of Alta Maremma, near Bibbona, as an area with exceptional potential. Influenced by the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea, this zone offers cooler temperatures, constant breezes and complex soils rich in clay, limestone and stones.
From the outset, Biserno was conceived as a terroir-driven estate rather than a stylistic continuation of Bolgheri. The vineyards were planted with great precision, focusing on Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, varieties well suited to the area’s freshness and long growing season. The aim was elegance over power, structure balanced by tension, and wines that age with grace. Today, Tenuta di Biserno stands as one of the most refined estates on the Tuscan coast. Under meticulous vineyard management and a restrained, thoughtful approach in the cellar.
Occhione 2024 is Tenuta di Biserno’s fresh and approachable white, designed to capture immediacy and coastal character. Made primarily from Vermentino, the wine reflects the sea-influenced climate of the Tuscan coast, where freshness and salinity are key. The 2024 vintage emphasised purity and aromatic lift. Vinification takes place mainly in stainless steel, preserving bright fruit, crisp acidity and varietal clarity. The result is a clean, vibrant wine with citrus and white flowers. An elegant, modern expression of the Tuscan coast, focused on drinkability and finesse.
