THE ITALIAN GRAPE (94)
A vibrant and expressive Tuscan red that captures the modern soul of Bolgheri. The 2023 vintage shows pure red and dark berry fruit, subtle herbal notes and a touch of spice. On the palate it is fresh, juicy and well-balanced, with fine-grained tannins and drinkability. Elegant and powerful, with a clean, savoury finish. A versatile wine that works just as well on its own as at the table.
ROBERT PARKER (93)
Moving to the reds, the 2023 Bolgheri Rosso boasts a youthful medium ruby red color, while the nose is pretty and floral with aromas of dusty earth, mixed berries, fresh herbs, and violets. The palate has a lot of focus and a bright, refreshing spine of acidity, fine tannins, and a clean, lightly mineral-inflected savoriness on the finish. A fantastic entry to the range with a huge potential for value, drink it over the next 8-10 years. It has a lot of precision and focus at this time and will only improve with another 6-12 months in the bottle.
About the wine
Le Macchiole is one of the estates that defined modern Bolgheri. Founded in the early 1980s by Eugenio Campolmi, the winery began with a clear vision: to express Bolgheri through single-variety wines with precision and elegance. After Eugenio’s early passing, his wife Cinzia Merli took over, guiding Le Macchiole to international acclaim with a strong focus on terroir, sustainability and purity of fruit. Today, the estate is known for its refined, site-driven style and restrained use of oak.
Le Macchiole Rosso 2023 is a vibrant introduction to the estate’s philosophy. The wine is a blend dominated by Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and Syrah, reflecting Bolgheri’s Mediterranean character. The 2023 vintage was warm but balanced, resulting in fresh fruit, moderate alcohol and excellent drinkability. Vinification takes place in stainless steel, followed by ageing mainly in cement and used oak, preserving freshness and clarity. The style is juicy, polished and precise, with notes of red and dark berries, subtle spice and leather. Le Macchiole Rosso is approachable and expressive, yet unmistakably serious, a true snapshot of Bolgheri in a youthful, elegant form.
