THE ITALIAN GRAPE (93)
Everything you want in a Chardonnay with character. It has that creamy butteriness, richness, and the depth from oak aging, but it is so refined that it never feels overwhelming after a glass. Perfectly balanced with freshness, thanks to the high-altitude vineyards of Fallwind. A true delight that is both complex and elegant.
JAMES SUCKLING (91)
Lemon zest and apple pulp with a hint of spice, sprite and stones. Medium-bodied with fresh, creamy acidity and a slightly phenolic, medium-long finish.
About the wine
St. Michael-Eppan is a renowned winery located in the heart of Alto Adige, Italy, with a rich history that dates back to its founding in 1907. Established by a group of local winegrowers, the winery was built on a foundation of tradition, collaboration, and a deep respect for the region's unique terroir. Over the years, St. Michael-Eppan has evolved into one of the leading producers in Alto Adige, celebrated for its commitment to quality and innovation. The winery encompasses approximately 340 hectares of vineyards, primarily planted with indigenous and international grape varieties. The ideal climate, characterized by warm days and cool nights, allows for the production of wines that are vibrant, aromatic, and well-structured.
The Fallwind line from St. Michael-Eppan highlights the freshness, intensity, and purity of South Tyrol’s climate and soils. The Fallwind Chardonnay is named after the cold alpine winds that cool the vineyards, ensuring a balance of acidity and freshness in the grapes. This unique interplay of warm days and cool nights allows the grapes to ripen evenly while preserving their vibrant character. Part of the wine ferments and ages in stainless steel tanks to maintain fresh, fruity aromas, while another portion matures in large wooden barrels for added complexity and a delicate structure. This blend creates a refined balance of crispness and roundness. During aging, the wine rests on its lees with regular stirring (batonnage), enhancing depth, creaminess, and subtle notes of almond and butter, while retaining its lively acidity.
The 2023 vintage in Alto Adige proved to be remarkable, characterized by a combination of ideal weather conditions and a focus on sustainable viticulture. Spring arrived with moderate temperatures and sufficient rainfall, promoting healthy vine growth. As summer set in, the region experienced a warm and dry climate, which was crucial for achieving optimal grape ripeness. Harvesting began under clear skies, allowing winemakers to pick at the perfect moment. The grapes showed excellent flavor concentration and balanced acidity, resulting in wines that exhibit both freshness and depth.
