THE ITALIAN GRAPE (94)
The Campo San Giorgio Conero Riserva is the powerhouse of Umani Ronchi, named Winery of the Year in 2024, thanks to their strong investments in innovation and sustainability. This is a 100% Montepulciano that matures for 24 months in French oak and then spends another 12 months in the bottle. The result is a bold, complex wine with rich, ripe fruit, particularly dark berries. While it’s certainly ready to drink now, it is a wine that does not rush—if you have it in your cellar, it can patiently develop further and only improve with time.
JAMES SUCKLING (95)
A lovely shellfish aroma rises first to the nose, followed by notes of fresh orange peel and ripe purple plums. The palate is already engaged, repeating the same fresh fruit and mineral character that gives this wine a light feel despite its Riserva status. Firm tannins emerge at the end. This is a very fine, terroir-driven wine that just needs time to shake off the still-youthful tannins. An exceptional wine for the Marche. Best from 2024.
About the wine
The story of Umani Ronchi starts in 1957 in Cupramontana, right at the center of Verdicchio Classico. Now, it's already the third generation of the Bianchi-Bernetti family running this great family business. They have always been looking for the best places, techniques, and skills, which helped the small family business to grow while keeping its true self and focus on quality. From Castelli di Jesi to Conero and Abruzzo, Umani Ronchi owns a total of 210 hectares of vineyards, growing grapes like Verdicchio, Montepulciano, and Pecorino. They have twelve vineyards, covering about 185 kilometers of rows of vines, all grown following the rules of organic farming!
The Conero Riserva Campo San Giorgio beautifully showcases the rich history of Umani Ronchi and highlights the exceptional potential of the Montepulciano grape from the Conero region. Over the years, after experimenting with various harvests, the land has distinctly proven its unique character, offering wines that truly reflect the terroir. Located in the Conero hills, the vineyards benefit from a combination of Mediterranean climate and the limestone-rich soils of the region, which are perfect for growing Montepulciano. This wine is deeply rooted in the long-standing family tradition of Umani Ronchi, which has been producing high-quality wines for generations. The Campo San Giorgio label is inspired by the Rosso Conero wines from the 1970s, evoking a sense of local heritage. The label reflects the essence of the region, with its vineyards, the village of Camerano, and the towering Mount Conero in the background.
The Campo San Giorgio is a 100% Montepulciano that undergoes an intensive aging process, spending 24 months in French oak and another 12 months in the bottle, allowing it to develop its deep complexity. The wine is rich, full-bodied, and packed with dark fruit flavors, such as ripe blackberries and plums, layered with hints of spice, tobacco, and subtle earthy notes. With its remarkable structure, the wine has excellent aging potential. While it can be enjoyed now, it will continue to evolve beautifully over the next decade, offering an even more refined and intricate experience as it matures. This wine not only reflects the excellence of the Conero region but also celebrates the innovative spirit and dedication of Umani Ronchi.
