THE ITALIAN GRAPE (96)
2013 might be my favorite vintage from Piedmont. It was a cooler growing season and late harvest resulted in wines of purity and finesse, with fine acidity. That purity is evident in many top Barolos from 2013. The Brunate is a cru from Roberto Voerzio, one of his top vineyards. Limited production to 3500 bottles, this is one of the greatest treasures of this vintage. Aged for 24 months in used barriques and 15hl casks, 8 months in steel, 8 months in bottle. Roberto is one of the top talents of the Barolo Boys and, in my opinion, that quality really shines through in this vintage. It is a top quality Barolo with a long and concentrated finish, dark tones and a beautiful dark color. It is now starting to enter its drinking window and you will only enjoy it from now on!
FALSTAFF (96)
Intense, shining ruby garnet. A fine, open nose with notes of raspberries, pickled cherries and plums along with coriander seed in the background. Broad and substantial on the palate, presenting plenty of finely-meshed tannin with sweet fruit-driven texture at the core. Lots of clear fruit leads to a long and rich finish.
About the wine
Establishing his winery in the 1980s, Voerzio strategically acquired prime vineyard sites with optimal exposures, crafting limited quantities of each cru with remarkable power and structure. Brunate, La Serra, Cerequio, Rocche dell’Annunziata, and Brunate—these prestigious vineyards, all situated in La Morra, are the birthplaces of Voerzio's various cru wines.
Among Voerzio's portfolio, Barolo Brunate shines with particular character. Revered for its southern exposure and rich clay soils, the Brunate vineyard is a cornerstone of the Barolo DOCG area, yielding wines with exceptional structure, depth, and persistence. Producing less than 4000 bottles annually, this wine epitomizes Nebbiolo's strength and austerity, showcasing the essence of Voerzio's winemaking prowess.
The 2013 vintage was very strong for Barolo despite variable conditions across the region, and while the wines continue to evolve, most are drinking extremely well now.
